BC’s magnificent Kinsol Trestle

Trans Canada Trail is providing $250,000 to help rebuild BC's Kinsol Trestle on Vancouver Island. It is a vital link on the Cowichan Valley Trail and an important heritage site.

Designed by engineers but built by local farmers and loggers starting in 1911, the Kinsol Trestle is one of the largest and most spectacular timber rail trestle structures in the world. At 614 feet in length and standing 145 feet above the Koksilah River, the Trestle brings history to life in a powerful way.  Last used by trains in 1979 and closed for decades to foot passengers, this is a multi-million dolllar project which is generating enormous community support.

The Trestle is expected to open in spring 2011 and will be a must-see feature on the Trans Canada Trail.

Update: Work has begun on the Kinsol trestle rehabilitation! Fundraising efforts continue and the local community has raise $1.1 of the $2 million goal. [Read more]
