Sea to Sky Trail joins Trans Canada Trail

The Sea to Sky Trail, a project of the Squamish Lillooet Regional District, is proud to be included as a new portion of the Trans Canada Trail system.

Rising from the Pacific Ocean into the spectacular Coastal Mountain Range, this route will connect Metro Vancouver with Whistler in time for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Beautiful British Columbia.

Starting south at Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, travel is currently over water; approximately 45 kilometres and the length of Howe Sound. Connecting with the Trans Canada and Spirit Trails to Squamish, this canoe/kayak section will be supplemented by a land route in subsequent phases with future trail expansion.

From landfall in Squamish, the trail proceeds north along roaring rivers and past mountains to Whistler Village. Winding streams, pristine lakes, old growth forest and dramatic rock formations line the journey through traditional territory of the Squamish and Lil’wat - First Nations region.

The trail features views of Shannon Falls (the third highest waterfall in B.C.), 700 meter cliffs of the Stawamus Chief (the world’s second largest granite monolith), and the volcanic pinnacle of Black Tusk. Additional highlights are the basalt surrounds of beautiful Brandywine Falls and an unforgettable experience of the internationally renowned, mountain resort community of Whistler. Interpretive signage will celebrate many natural features, along with the human history and culture of the region.

This section of the Sea to Sky Trail is part of a larger vision; to continue over 100 km north through Pemberton, Mt. Currie and on to historic Lillooet, connecting via a network of regional trails to central British Columbia.

The route from Squamish to Whistler will be substantially complete and marked by the end of 2009. Future development will continue on this exciting project for years to come.
